Hugging Chat pro

I have Hugging Face pro, but on my second day using Hugging Chat, I get this message. Am I doing something wrong that Hugging Chat doesn’t know I have pro? I’m logged in to both

Hmm… It will likely be one of the following cases.

You are probably not doing anything wrong.
That popup usually means one of three things, none of which are user error:

  1. HuggingChat is logged into a different Hugging Face account than the one that has Pro.
  2. Your Pro subscription payment never actually attached to your account.
  3. Your small monthly Pro inference credit is already used up, and HuggingChat is now treating you like a free user with no remaining credits.

I will walk through each with simple checks.

1. How HuggingChat + Pro actually work

Background first:

  • HuggingChat Omni is just a front-end that calls models through Hugging Face Inference Providers.(Hugging Face)

  • Every Hugging Face account gets a small pool of inference credits per month that all these calls share:

    • Free account: about $0.10 per month.
    • Pro account: $2.00 per month.(Hugging Face)
  • When that credit is gone, any product that uses Inference Providers (APIs, Spaces, agents, HuggingChat) will start throwing “you’ve exceeded your credits / upgrade to Pro / subscribe” type messages.(Hugging Face Forums)

So “message limit” in HuggingChat is really “you’ve hit the credit limit for this account”.

2. Case A – Wrong account logged in

This is the simplest explanation.

HuggingChat uses whatever account you are logged in with on huggingface.co. There is no separate “HuggingChat account”.

Common failure pattern:

  • You buy Pro for account A.
  • Browser is logged into A on huggingface.co.
  • But HuggingChat is running in another tab that is still authenticated as old account B.
  • Chat sees no Pro on B, so it shows “Upgrade to Pro to continue using HuggingChat”.

Check

  1. In HuggingChat, click your avatar / profile in the top-right and note the username.
  2. On huggingface.co, also check the username in the top-right.

If these are not exactly the same, you are paying Pro on one account and chatting on another. In that case, log out everywhere and log back in with the Pro account.

3. Case B – Pro payment did not actually activate

There are many forum posts where people were billed but their account never got Pro status; their billing dashboard shows no active Pro plan.(Hugging Face Forums)

If that happens, HuggingChat is technically correct: it really sees you as a free user.

Check

  1. Go to your Billing page on Hugging Face (Settings → Billing).
  2. Look for something like “Hugging Face PRO” under subscriptions.(Hugging Face)

If the billing page does not show an active Pro subscription, then:

  • Your payment and subscription are out of sync.
  • You are effectively on the free tier, so HuggingChat shows the upgrade message.

Resolution in similar cases online has been:

Support has had to fix several such accounts manually.

4. Case C – Your Pro inference credits are already used up

Even with Pro, the included credit is small:

  • Pro users get $2.00 of inference credits per month.([Hugging Face][2])

  • Heavy models and long chats can burn through that quickly, especially on day 1–2 if you test a lot or use big models (e.g., big LLMs at provider rates).

  • Once the $2 credit is gone, you either:

    • Get “exceeded your monthly included credits” 402 errors in APIs and Spaces, or
    • See upgrade/limit messages in UIs like HuggingChat.(Hugging Face Forums)

Other users report hitting this limit very quickly after buying Pro and being surprised that Pro is not unlimited usage.(Reddit)

Check

  1. Go to the Inference Providers usage page in your HF settings.
  2. It shows how much of the monthly $2 credit you’ve spent.

If it shows something like “$2.00 used / $2.00 available” (or shows a positive balance owed), then your credit is gone. In that situation, the message is expected: you have Pro, but no free credit left.

What happens then depends on your billing setup:

  • If pay-as-you-go is enabled, extra usage starts being billed per token / per request.([Hugging Face][2])
  • If not, you just hit a wall and see “limit reached / upgrade” style messages until next month’s reset or until billing is configured.

5. Case D – Everything looks correct, but HuggingChat still blocks you

If all three checks look good:

  • Same account in HuggingChat and on the Hub.
  • Billing page shows active Pro.
  • Inference Providers usage shows you still have credit left.

and you still get “Upgrade to Pro” after a handful of messages, then it is probably a platform bug or some weird account state.

That also appears in the forums: some Enterprise or Pro accounts get “exceeded credits / subscribe to Pro” even though they should have plenty of allowance, and staff had to fix it manually.([Hugging Face Forums][3])

In that case, again:

  • Email [email protected] with:

    • Screenshot of the HuggingChat popup
    • Screenshot of Billing showing Pro active
    • Screenshot of Inference Providers usage showing credits remaining
  • Or open a thread on the Hugging Face forum under “Beginners” or “Site Feedback” and attach the same info.([Hugging Face Forums][3])

Short, concrete checklist for you

  1. Verify the account

  2. Check subscription

    • Settings → Billing: does it clearly say you have an active “Hugging Face PRO” subscription?
  3. Check credits

    • Settings → Inference / Inference Providers usage: are your $2 Pro credits already at zero?
  4. If all three are fine

You are not “using it wrong”. This message comes from how Hugging Face ties HuggingChat to the shared Inference Providers credit system and from some known subscription / credit glitches.
